Bound 2016 Hyundai Elantra revealed with 1.4L Turbo engine – USA
The front fascia integrates front wheel “air curtains” to minimize drag and turbulence and, along with underbody cladding and the shape of the bodywork, result in a pretty low 0.27 drag coefficient.
Today’s premiere at the Los Angeles Auto Show represents our first look at Hyundai’s new small sedan in Elantra form, and an Australian market launch is scheduled for the first quarter of 2016. Hyundai’s “signature” hexagonal grille dominates the front end, along with dramatically angled headlights and vertical LED daytime running lights. The 2017 Elantra is significantly reworked inside and out with structural enhancements, new powertrains, new safety features and a host of new technology. One has a 7.0-inch Display Audio touchscreen and the other an 8.0-inch touch screen with Hyundai’s next-gen navigation system.
The Elantra Eco is powered by a turbocharged 1.4-liter Kappa GDI that has an output of 128 HP and 156 lb-ft (211 Nm) of torque from 1,400-3,700 rpm.
Motivating the 2017 Elantra are two new 4-cylinder engines. Standard for the sedan is a 2.0-liter Atkinson four-cylinder engine with 147 horsepower and 132 pound-feet of torque. This one will be offered with either a 6-speed manual or 6-speed automatic. A next-gen Sport model also is in the pipeline and Hyundai promises it will be “the most powerful Elantra yet”.
The structure of the 2017 Elantra is stiffer thanks to the use of more than doubling the amount of advanced high-strength steel to 53 percent.
We got the see the USA version of the 2017 Hyundai Elantra at the LA Auto Show this year and although we loved what Hyundai had to offer on the outside, it felt like Hyundai had given up when it comes to competing with their rivals in terms of powertrain.
The chassis itself has been given a healthy dose of strengthening with a 29.5 percent improvement in torsional rigidity with the goal of decreasing noise, vibrations and harshness while increasing vehicle dynamics, which are also being helped by a redesigned rear suspension.
Pricing for the 2017 Hyundai Elantra will be announced closer to its on-sale date. A host of active safety systems are also now available, including autonomous emergency braking, rear cross-traffic alert, and lane-keep assist.
