Jon Jones Hints at NY Comeback Fight
It’s been a long and troubled journey for ex-UFC light-heavyweight champion Jon Jones, as he’s faced controversy following a failed UFC 182 drug test and an infamous New Mexico hit and run that could’ve seen “Bones” jailed for five years.
Jones posted a side-by-side comparison on his private Instagram account of what he looked like during the off-season in 2013 and what he looks like today after a recent session in the weight room.
Cormier has been vocal about not wanting to give Jones, a New Yorker, the so-called homefield advantage by facing him at UFC 198, which is now scheduled for April 23 at Madison Square Garden in NY City, although that event is the subject of a current legal battle between the UFC and the State of NY.
Jones, the most decorated light heavyweight champion in UFC history, dominated Cormier in January to post a division record eighth straight title defense. I want to send a honest thank you to @mr_nfp @nez_hoover @zia_nfp for being such an awesome program and pushing me to this new level of fitness.
Off season 2013 vs off season 2015. Cormier said at the UFC 192 post-fight press conference. “I’ll be sure to be at my best April 23 #NewLevels”, Jones wrote. “No, he has to go somewhere where he has to look at people in the eyes and hear the anger they have toward him for the actions that he did”. No fights have been announced for that card yet, so it is possible that Jones may have spilled the beans on a date for a potential title rematch with Cormier.
This could, of course, simply be social media posturing/lobbying by Jones, who has wanted to fight in Madison Square Garden since the UFC began efforts to legally promote an event in NY.
