A snapshot of the final four Chase drivers
Did you know: The season title will be decided by finishing order among Gordon, Harvick, Busch and Truex…. Except this “law firm” can outperform any its competitors, not in the courtroom but at high speeds.
AVONDALE, AZ – Jeff Gordon, driver of the #24 Pepsi Chevrolet, greets the crowd during driver introductions for the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series Quicken Loans Race for Heroes 500 at Phoenix worldwide Raceway on November 15, 2015.
Others: Someone outside the Chase could win the race Sunday. This will be the 17th Sprint Cup race held at Homestead-Miami Speedway…. Their once-friendly relationship grew particularly frosty in 2014, with tensions finally boiling over in the fall at Texas Motor Speedway when Gordon, Keselowski and members of their respective teams engaged in an all-out post-race fisticuffs on pit road. The two engaged in many close battles on the track from Gordon’s first championship season of 1995 until Earnhardt’s death in February 2001, with Gordon usually having the upper hand. “But as we’ve proven throughout the Chase, even though your auto is competitive, there’s a lot of things that can go wrong in our sport, just whether it’s mistakes from me or parts failures or whatever goes on”.
The driver among these four who crosses the finish line first on Sunday in Miami will win the 2015 Chase title.
Harvick’s 7.6 average finish on 1 1/2-mile tracks is the best among active drivers.
Note of interest: Harvick could join Cale Yarborough, Darrell Waltrip and Jimmie Johnson as the only modern era drivers (1972 to present) to win a first series championship and follow it with a second the subsequent year. In 10 starts at the 1.5-mile oval, he has achieved three top fives, seven top 10s and an average finish of 10.0.
Since all four contenders are experienced Chasers, it’s unlikely they’ll be overwhelmed by stressful scene in Homestead. However, NBC Sports analyst Jeff Burton thinks the final four racers will all feel the pressure. Stewart won the first two races (1999-2000), then won again in 2011 when he edged Carl Edwards for the title. Each will visit Krista Voda, Kyle Petty andDale Jarrett on the Countdown to Green pre-race set to discuss their expectations, nerves and final thoughts heading into the Championship race.
As always, the crew chiefs will be a factor. However, all those races came when Busch wasn’t a Chase contender and that could make a difference Sunday. Logano has a series-high six wins this year.
Fearless forecast I’d be comfortable selecting any of the four to win the title. What a way for him to go out – collecting his fifth championship.
The California native is retiring after this season, which has one race left, Sunday at 3 p.m.in Homestead Fla., and is looking for one last championship to cap his career. “Going into the final race of the season with a shot of winning the championship is an awesome feeling”.
“But you saw the raw emotion of what that win meant to me”. That is nothing compared to what you will see in Homestead if we do that. To that point, I actually thought it was so different and so unique that the guys in the body shop would never want to touch it.
TV: Saturday, 2:45 p.m., NBC. He also owns three finishes worse than 30th, including a 39th-place finish there past year.
Harvick was back on stage Thursday along with Kyle Busch, Jeff Gordon and Martin Truex Jr. Greg Biffle and Tony Stewart have three wins each at Homestead. Biffle won three in a row (2004-06). This will be the 21st Xfinity Series race at Homestead-Miami Speedway….
Why will win: Because he’s Jeff Gordon.
