Entergy makes it official – will close FitzPatrick nuclear plant
Entergy says it has broken off talks with NY state officials and will “permanently cease power operations” at its FitzPatrick nuclear plant near Oswego.
Despite two attempts at negotiations with NY state, Entergy said those talks were unsuccessful and are now over.
The plant will shut down in late 2016 or early 2017 after it has completed it current fuel cycle.
Entergy representative Tammy Holden confirmed to Time Warner Cable News that FitzPatrick employees were informed today that the Cessation of Power Operations letter was filed with the NRC.
“The biggest concern here is the 615 jobs at Fitzpatrick and the good salaries that those jobs pay”, Barclay said. The company has said it will offer them positions at other facilities around the country.
The closing letter comes in the same week Governor Cuomo announced continued opposition to the relicensing of another Entergy nuclear plant, at Indian Point downstate. He said it was too close to NY City for a competent evacuation plan and cited the plant’s deteriorating condition.
