Karlsson scores to lift Sharks over Flyers 1-0 in overtime
Neither the Sharks or the Flyers were able to get the puck in the net in regulation, but a strong performance by Martin Jones and a Melker Karlsson overtime beauty were all the Sharks would need tonight in Philadelphia.
Joonas Donskoi set up the game-winner on a 2-on-1 with Karlsson, who took the cross-ice pass and shot high past goalie Steve Mason.
The Flyers got out to a sloppy start, generating not a single shot attempt through the first six minutes of the game as they were overwhelmed by the Sharks’ forechecking.
Philadelphia controlled the second period, but Jones stopped every one of the 15 shots directed his way. Philly pulled off a 3-2 comeback 3-2 overtime win on Saturday against the host Carolina Hurricanes and then put forth one of their best all-around efforts of the season despite a 3-2 shootout loss to the LA Kings on Tuesday.
Philadelphia was 0-for-2. San Jose has not allowed a power play goal in five of its last six games.
San Jose went through a 12:57 minute stretch without a shot on goal, and the vaunted Joe Pavelski-Joe Thornton pairing was held in check by Sean Couturier and his linemates. Brent Burns had eight shots. The Sharks failed to capitalize before putting Philadelphia on its first man advantage in which Jones was under heavy fire, but never broke by making three saves. Defenseman Mark Streit is on long-term injured reserve for surgery to fix a displaced pubic plate. If the Sharks can emerge victorious in this one, they will already have clinched a winning road trip which is a pretty impressive feat considering San Jose had three out of their four games on their home stand prior to heading back East. Patrick Marleau scored a goal to move to within one tally or assist from reaching the coveted 1,000 point milestone in his regular season National Hockey League career.
Marleau has 11 points in 19 games this season. The Sharks will be looking to continue that trend against the Flyers who are tied with the Anaheim Ducks in scoring only 34 goals for the entire season.
Former Flyer and long-time Devils forward Dainius Zubrus – a player DeBoer deployed effectively against Philadelphia during their time together in New Jersey – joined the Sharks on a tryout basis this week. Sharks C Logan Couture remained out with a leg injury.
Flyers: C Vinny Lecavalier (healthy); D Evgeny Medvedev (healthy).
Scratches: Nikolay Goldobin (healthy), Ben Smith (healthy), Matt Tennyson (healthy), Logan Couture (IR, fractured fibula).
