Frank Lampard’s text message convinced Didier Drogba to stay at Chelsea
Robben had missed the chance to give Bayern a 2-1 lead in the third minute of extra time after Drogba had fouled Franck Ribery in Chelsea’s historic win at the Allianz Arena – Bayern’s home ground.
Chelsea legend Didier Drogba has offered his take on why Fernando Torres flopped at the club after his £50million transfer from Liverpool.
Drogba had clearly not done his research on English football despite being the league’s most talked about signings.
“Towards the end of the session I asked another player who the young guy was”.
“‘I don’t care”, I remember saying. “It’s the captain!” he replied, laughing.
Torres arrived at the Blues, for a then British record fee, with the club having won the Premier League title the previous season, scoring 103 goals in the process.
But their inspiration behind the remarkable rearguard action was not manager Roberto Di Matteo, nor red-carded skipper John Terry who had been sent off in the first-half, but full-back Jose Bosingwa.
Chelsea FC went on to win that game, qualifying for the Champions League final in Munich, where they faced FC Bayern Munich. Drogba himself had lost faith, but was egged on by playmaker Juan Mata.
Speculation has always been rife – especially after Jose Mourinho’s first spell in charge of Chelsea – that Roman Abramovich allowed the senior players to have the biggest say at Stamford Bridge. Luiz said, “Just watch, we’re going to score now”. “Don’t do it! Anyway, we’ll know where you’re going to shoot”, Drogba and Lampard told Robben, according to the Ivorian’s book.
