Second Test between India, South Africa abandoned due to rain
The All-India Senior Selection Committee met here to name the squad after the rain-affected second match ended in a draw.
If play does resume on any of the remaining days of the second Test, it will be interesting to see whether South Africa can gain a few confidence heading into the third Test in Nagpur.
After the weather threw a wet blanket over any hope of play, the umpires, following two inspections – first at 10am and another at 11.30am – chose to call off the match. “It’s a pity that we lost four days when we were in such a strong position”. All credit to the bowlers.
The hosts won the first match of the four-Test series by 108 runs in Mohali.
The former opener said the current Indian Test team is well balanced with tremendous potential.
“We got a long layoff for these rained-out days, everybody’s very keen to get back on the park”. The team is in great mood, and hopefully we don’t have any interruptions any more and our players would execute their skills in Nagpur, ” he pointed out.
“The first Test match (in Mohali) we beat South Africa very comfortably”. So we were on course to do that to get control on the important moment in the game and capitalize.
“It’s always annoying for any side even if you have the momentum or you don’t have the momentum to come to the ground and have no play. Amit Mishra bowled really well in the last game but we did not play him here because we thought Stuart will do well here”.
India went about their batting cautiously and the opening pair of Murali Vijay (28*) and Shikhar Dhawan (45*) ensured that there were no hiccups in the innings. The 71.1 overs played in the 1995 India-New Zealand match in Chennai tops this list.
