Cameron Convenes Emergency Meeting Following Paris Attacks
David Cameron has said the United Kingdom “must be prepared for a number of British casualties” in Friday night’s terrorist attacks on Paris, as he pledged to do everything possible to help France following the murder of at least 127 people in multiple attacks on the country’s capital city.
Prime Minister David Cameron condemned the attackers as “brutal and callous murderers”, adding: “We will redouble our efforts to wipe out this poisonous, extremist ideology”.
“It is clear that the threat from Isil (IS) is evolving”. And speaking directly to the French people, the U.K.’s prime minister said, “Your values are our values, your pain is our pain, your fight is our fight”.
“We in the United Kingdom face the same threat”, he added. “Peace. Tolerance. Liberty. But we will not let them”.
“We’re strengthening our policing stance at the moment across the country”, he said on Saturday. The highest threat level in Britain is “critical”, but Cameron said he had no plan move it there, according to the Telegraph in the United Kingdom The “severe” threat level has been in place since August 2014, Reuters said.
French President Francois Hollande declared a state of emergency in France and closed the French borders, also ordering the mobilization of extra servicemen to ensure security following the attacks. “We will do whatever we can to help”, he said on Twitter.
