Apple Music’s Jimmy Iovine Said a few Dumb Shit About Women And Music
Appearing on CBS This Morning, the music mogul said Apple Music, the company’s streaming music service, makes it easier for women to find music they like-which is important because, as Iovine explains, “I always knew that women find it very hard at times – a few women – to find music”.
Jimmy Iovine is a business titan, but the mogul is under fire for suggesting that women don’t know how to find music.
One of Apple Music’s biggest drawcards is that they get playlists curated by artists or real people, bereft of algorithms, which Iovine says is ideal for when girls are just trying to choose the flawless soundtrack for, as he puts it, “complaining about boys”. “They’re made by algorithms, but with a human touch”. They need music for that, right? “Not everyone has the right lists or knows a DJ”.
Apple Music executive Jimmy Iovine had the internet scratching its collective head on Thursday over statements he made about how women find music online. We have a feeling he won’t be doing too many interviews on behalf of Apple in the future.
King: We’re so glad that you’re here for your debut appearance on “CBS This Morning”. BLIGE to discuss the new ad for the streaming music service, but his contention that women need help in finding music has resulted in a firestorm of comments from all quarters. He proceeded to mention the problem of girls “sitting around” and “talking about boys”.
Iovine’s contestable comments come a month after his public attack on Spotify and the “freemium” model at the Vanity Fair New Establishment Summit in San Francisco.
That pile of old mix tapes in the September spot is telling, though: knowing what music to listen to didn’t used to be a problem; if anything, services like Apple Music have created a problem where there was none.
“The day that Jimmy brought the idea to me it was like, ‘Wow, why didn’t I think of that?'” Blige said. The nine-time Grammy Award victor did not say if she struggled to find music.
