Paris attacks leave concerns over path to IS territory, security experts alarmed
A total of 129 people were killed and 350 injured in the attacks.
Two Air France flights bound for Paris from the U.S. were diverted Tuesday night one to Salt Lake City and one to Halifax because of anonymous threats received after they had taken off. Both were inspected and cleared to resume their journeys. The attacks killed 129 people and wounded more than 350.
Several suspected attackers and potential accomplices remained holed up in an apartment after the shoot-out, the source said. Seven died in the attacks and one got away across the border to Belgium, they said. However, there have been gaps in officials’ public statements, which have never fully disclosed how many attackers took part in the deadly rampage. The official, who spoke on condition of anonymity because the investigation is continuing, said the actions were focusing on Hadfi’s “entourage”. Then two more explosions. Authorities believe the auto is the same black SEAT-make vehicle that was found Saturday with three Kalashnikovs inside.
Previously officials had not specified how many people were involved in the attack on the sidewalk bar on La Fontaine au Roi street, as well as the other night spots.
Investigators have identified 27-year-old Abdelhamid Abaaoud, a Belgian of Moroccan descent, as the chief architect of the attacks. The Islamic State group has claimed responsibility for the carnage. A consensus is now emerging that the group is more focused on exporting terror than had been widely understood.
In Washington, Rep. Adam B. Schiff of California, the senior Democrat on the House Intelligence Committee, said Monday that a few USA officials believed that Abaaoud was still in Syria. But their understanding is hampered by the challenges of gathering intelligence in Syria, where the CIA does not have a regular presence on the ground.
Kerry said “this visit will underscore the friendship and solidarity between the United States and France – our oldest ally”. Richard Burr, R-North Carolina, said there was no direct evidence of encryption, but that authorities had concluded it was used because they have uncovered no evidence of conversations among the plotters.
Earlier, police spent seven hours searching for suspects in a neighborhood near the French capital. “The refugee debate is an example of us not being well served by a few of the commentary taking place by officials back home and in the media”. The Paris attacks have galvanized global determination to confront the militants.
The police assault was launched at 4:20am (0320 GMT), putting Saint-Denis on lockdown as helicopters buzzed in the sky and snipers took up position on rooftops.

“Paris, which knows how to rebound, will do so”, Kerry said. Earlier on Tuesday, police searched premises they believe were used by the attackers. A manhunt has been mounted for an eighth suspect, Salah Abdeslam, whom French police accidentally permitted to cross into Belgium on Saturday.
A third brother, Mohamed, who was not involved in the assaults, made a public appeal on Tuesday for Salah Abdeslam to turn himself in. Both are being held on charges of terrorist murder and conspiracy. The officials were not authorized to be publicly named speaking about an ongoing investigation. “Everything will be done to determine who is who”, Paris prosecutor Francois Molins said at the end of the operation.
The message was sent at 9:42 pm, before the attack on the Bataclan, Molins said, adding that police were investigating who the message was sent to.
