Remembering the sacrifice on Veterans Day
In 1954, the name was changed to “Veterans Day”. On November 11, 1918 the Allied Nations and Germany agreed to end hostilities, paving the way for the Treaty of Versailles to officially end World War I. Among those walking in the parade was Elmer Folsom, who came home from World War II and settled into a life as a teacher and eventually a dairy farmer.
The bureau says there were 7 million Vietnam War veterans in 2014, 5.5 million from the Gulf Wars. “My fifth great-grandfather, all the way up through my brother and I – everyone has served in the military from the Civil War on”. We honor you, fine men and women, on this your special day.

It was the first time in more than 20 years that a Veterans Day parade was held in Sumter.

It was a time to pay tribute to a group of veterans, those who put their lives on the line for their country and received little in return when they got home.

Portman was joined by members of the VFW Post 10691 and American Legion Post 800 in Veterans Park.

The parade made its way through downtown and ended at the All Wars monument; where a ceremony honored all veterans and commemorated the Vietnam War’s anniversary.
