Snow warning for this weekend
“A swathe of gale-force north to north-westerly winds, accompanied by a band of rain and snow, will move south across much of central and southern Britain on Friday night and Saturday”, the Met Office said in its warning.
However, a few of the weather models indicate that other parts of England and Wales could see a few sleet and snow during Friday night and Saturday morning as well, but it is less likely to settle away from the higher hills.
A Met Office statement said: “Much colder with sleet or snow showers over the weekend, and Saturday feeling raw in strong to gale force northerly winds”.
“The wintry showers could show up further south too, but they will become increasingly brief and scattered so that larger population centres may not see much if any impact”.
Snow is predicted to fall on the region’s high ground.
Temperatures are also due to fall.
“Tempera- tures will stay around a maximum of 3C to 4C in most areas”.
Weather forecasters have warned the milder than normal temperatures of the last few weeks will drop to below freezing in some areas, bringing snow to eastern areas of Scotland and the North Pennines by this evening. “Outbreaks of rain, sleet and snow at times with sleet and snow likely at lower levels”.
“Although this will be the first widespread cold spell of the season, it is fairly typical for mid-late November and it’s not unusual to see snow to lower levels in the north of the United Kingdom in late autumn”.
The German Weather Service (DWD) forecast for the coming weekend.
“As there is a likelihood of ice and snow this week, it’s also advisable to be aware of risks and clear snow and ice from pavements if possible”.
The weather station at Waddington recorded a temperature of 14.8c on Monday, November 9 – the highest it’s been on a November night since November 3, 1969, when it was 14.4c.
