Jacksonville Jaguars strike late to down Tennessee Titans
He took them from his 20 to the Jaguars 23 where on the last play of the game, he was sacked to end the drive. “I just needed that ball and he gave it to me the way I wanted it”.
Rashad Greene returned a punt 63 yards, setting up Blake Bortles’ 5-yard TD pass to Julius Thomas with 3:30 remaining, and the Jacksonville Jaguars beat the Tennessee Titans, 19-13, Thursday night in Jacksonville, Fla. Mularkey was sacked after one season with the Jaguars, a 2-14 campaign in 2012.
Mariota drove the Titans within striking distance, but in the end came up short. They’ll also play three of their next four at home and have the easiest remaining schedule in the NFL. Thomas would catch the Bortles pass on the next play as they scored their only touchdown of the game to take a 16-13 lead. After all, Bortles threw an ill-timed pick in plus-territory and fumbled on a quarterback sneak where you couldn’t really justify reaching for it because, away from the goalline, even a first down wouldn’t have guaranteed that the ball was dead. “That’s kind of a mismatch”.
On Tennessee’s next play, Phillip Supernaw fumbled after making a catch and Davon House recovered for the Jaguars at the 29-yard line.
“My fault on that play”, Supernaw said.
“The guy punched it out and I failed to do a good job in protecting the ball”. The Titans put up a goal-line stand for the second time in as many games, stopping the Jaguars on three consecutive runs in the third quarter, the final two from the 2-yard line. Andre Branch sacked Mariota to end the game. Branch did his usual windmill dance as he was mobbed by teammates. Any time it may look like we’re out to the public eye, to the naked eye, we feel deep down that we can win the game. Maybe it’s better to call this the “play of the game”.
Tennessee bring up the rear in the division at 2-8, with Indianapolis and Houston both 4-5.
Jacksonville, fresh off their win against our Baltimore Ravens also have their young quarterback, Blake Bortles. “We all know the situation with our division and we all know that it’s wide open”, Colvin said. Outside of that, it was an interesting matchup between young quarterbacks that look like they’re getting there.
Mariota was 22 of 35 for 231 yards for the Titans.
Mariota made a few incredible plays with his legs – his 23-yard touchdown run was the first of his career and the longest scoring run from any quarterback in the National Football League this season – but his accuracy was off (62.9 percent passing) and he only had regular success connecting with receivers off of play-action plays or designed roll-outs. Mariota finished the half completing 10-of-17 passes for 128 yards as the teams went to halftime tied 6-6. Hurns has been on fire, catching a touchdown in each of his last seven games.
The Jaguars entered the game without running back Bernard Pierce (calf), defensive tackle Michael Bennett (hamstring) and tight end Nic Jacobs (hamstring) due to injury. Allen Robinson was the beneficiary several Bortles passes. Greg Olson, the Jaguars Offensive Coordinator, really needs to find a way to take advantage of their big tight end in the red zone, or give it to a running back that is bigger than Robinson, because successful teams score touchdowns in this situation instead of field goals.
