Volkswagen faces pressure in United States to buy back older diesel cars
At the auto show Wednesday, Audi also announced that it wanted 25 percent of its USA sales to be electric cars – whether gas-electric hybrids or plug-in electric – by 2025.
“We write to urge you to offer more robust compensation for drivers of all VW vehicles purchased in the United States that contained defeat devices used to circumvent NOS emissions control requirements”, U.S. Sen.
DETROIT (AP) – When Volkswagen submits a plan to fix emissions-cheating diesel engines on Friday, it will have only two options for most of the cars. The meeting will take place on Friday.
Separately, U.S. Senators Ed Markey of MA and Richard Blumenthal of CT on Thursday released a letter calling on the automaker to buy back diesel vehicles that don’t meet pollution standards.
Bosch provides the engine control module, called EDC17, and basic software for almost all the four-cylinder diesel cars sold in North America, including Volkswagen and Daimler’s Mercedes-Benz.
The company said it is also co-operating with the California Air Resources Board and the Environmental Protection Agency in hopes of earning a few leniency when the regulators eventually decide on a punishment. The VW diesel cars emit more smog-forming pollutants than allowed by law.
“There’s frustrations and there’s sometimes anger but also a lot of support”, Horn told reporters in his first public comments on the emissions scandal since he appeared before the US Congress in October. Worldwide, there are an estimated 11 million cars with affected EA189 engines, including nearly 100,000 in Australia.
It’s no secret that the offending diesel-powered models from the Volkswagen Group were fitted with Bosch engine management systems, but Bosch was quick to volunteer its innocence once the dieselgate scandal broke.
She claims they sold her a auto with false emissions ratings. “All these reactions are fully understandable, since everybody at Volkswagen of America lives exactly through the same emotions”, Horn said.
At a Los Angeles auto show press conference, VWoA CEO Michael Horn addressed the elephant in the room, saying: “I am personally hopeful that we will be able to announce something soon about the remedies that we have identified and which we are discussing with the agencies in the upcoming days”. The latest models could be fixed but the older cars might have to be repurchased.
