Who inspired Carly Simon?
Ever since its release in 1972, anyone who’s ever listened to Carly Simon’s hit “You’re So Vain” has wondered who she’s describing about when sings, “You’re so vain, you probably think this song is about you”.
Simon’s revelation comes right before the release of her book, Boys in Trees which is due out November 24.
Carly Simon’s 1972 hit You’re So Vain – a rousing, impassioned evisceration of an egocentric lover – is one of the singer’s most enduringly popular songs.
She told People she thought she’d never even admit that the song was about multiple people, so good luck getting her to reveal who the other two men are. “I told them the first year that it was happening, and they thought I was just trying to be one of the bigger girls”.
The second verse includes the lyrics: “You had me several years ago when I was still quite naive”.
“I don’t think so”, she said.
Of course, it’s not the only song with a mystery subject.
“I have confirmed in that the 2nd verse is Warren”, Carly told People. And she’s not going to reveal the other men that inspired the song – at least not publicly, and at least not until she’s revealed her inspiration to the men themselves.
“I had a few dreams, they were clouds in my coffee…”
In an interview with People, the singer said she got involved with a family friend when she was just a kid. You’re so vain, I’ll bet you think this song is about you, don’t you, don’t you?
Today she lives happily on Martha’s Vineyard with surgeon Richard Koehler (she also was married for 19 years to poet James Hart, after Taylor).
