Security may top G20 agenda after Paris attacks
Antalya (Turkey), Nov 16: Endorsing India’s stand, the G20 leaders on Monday pushed for a collective plan to lift global growth, create employment and promote development to eradicate poverty and to ensure equitable, sustained and balanced growth.
Speaking after a G20 summit in Turkey, Obama described the attacks in France that killed 129 people as “a awful and sickening setback” and vowed to redouble efforts to destroy Islamic State, even as the group threatened to strike Washington.
She called for the next G20 Summit to be held in Paris.
The global economy remains very much a mixed bag for investors, with the United States looking like it may hike interest rates for the first time since 2006 next month, while much of the rest of the world, including China, remains vulnerable. Yet with Paris in the headlines, despite significant economic issues, sessions are expected to take place with a sense of urgency to fight terrorism.
“In pursuing our objectives, we have adopted a comprehensive agenda this year around the three pillars of decisive implementation of our past commitments to deliver on our promises, boosting investments as a powerful driver of growth and promoting inclusiveness in our actions so that the benefits of growth are shared by all” the draft said.
“The leaders strongly condemned the abhorrent terror attacks in Paris”. It notes that the ongoing refugee crisis is a global concern and seeks to encourage global contribution in managing the crisis.
The leaders said they would share more information and work more closely together to freeze terrorist assets, criminalize terrorist financing and impose robust sanctions on those involved.
German Chancellor Angela Merkel, Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe and Chinese President Xi Jinping, Saudi Arabia’s King Salman and International Monetary Fund Managing Director Christine Lagarde, among others, are attending the Summit.
The Group of 20 leading economies (G20) said on Monday the rise in terrorism undermined worldwide peace and security and endangered efforts to strengthen the global economy.
