Greene’s punt return helps Jaguars beat Titans 19-13
“It’s always exciting when you win a ballgame”, Bortles said.
They miss too many blocks, allow too many third-down conversions and fail to convert on too many short-yardage situations.
They’ve given up five sacks in three games since, taking a step back against the Jaguars, who aren’t a good pass-rush team but sacked Mariota four times.
And they have Rashad Greene to thank.
Blake Bortles 5-yard touchdown pass to Julius Thomas gave the Jacksonville Jaguars a 19-13 victory over the Tennessee Titans on Thursday night.
“He is just doing what he does best – make plays when he has to, ” Walker said.
On Tennessee’s next play, Phillip Supernaw fumbled after making a catch and Davon House recovered for the Jaguars at the 29-yard line.
Tennessee had a chance to steal the win with one final play, but Mariota was sacked before he could get the ball out. “I thought from the 20 to the 20 we were really good but we’ve got to continue to work”.
Greene’s punt return was the first huge special teams play of the year.
“We’ve been in these one-possession games all season”, coach Gus Bradley said.
However, a strong defensive stand by the Jaguars made the Titans punt again.
Thomas’ touchdown helped erase the red zone incompetence of the opening two-and-a-half quarters. The Titans also held the Jaguars to a three-and-out and 36-yard field goal after a turnover late in the fourth quarter.
And now comes potentially the fun part.
Bortles was 21-of-30 passing for 242 yards.
Titans-Jaguars was the first game of NFL Week 11.
The Jaguars responded with an 11-play series that spanned 73 yards and ended with a 31-yard field goal by Jason Myers on the second play of the second quarter to tie it up.
Tennessee began the season with Kendall Wright, Harry Douglas, Justin Hunter and second-round rookie Dorial Green-Beckham as their receivers. A week ago three tight ends for the Baltimore Ravens combined to catch 11 passes, two of which went for touchdowns.
After a Jaguars punt, Mariota scrambled for a first down on third-and-4, and running back Antonio Andrews, one of the slower running backs in the National Football League, ran for 23 yards, bouncing on a lame tackle attempt by Abry Jones. The Jaguars tried to run clock, but the Titans used their timeouts wisely and stopped a key third-and-short run with Avery Williamson hitting Yeldon for no gain. Third-and-3 – Bortles is sacked (loss of nine). That would set up a 47 yard field goal try for Ryan Succop. It might as well been first-and-goal from the Titans’ 47. The Titans put together an 81-yard march, including two pass-interference penalties against the Jaguars for 48 yards, in five plays. Marcus Mariota added 29 yards on five carries, including a 23-yard touchdown, the first rushing score of his career, which handed the Titans a 13-9 lead in the third quarter.
Bortles then moved the Jaguars downfield once again, but a poor throw to Thomas proved to be costly.
