Warriors rally past Clippers, 124-117
That lineup of Curry, Klay Thompson, Barnes, Iguodala, and Green has played 48 minutes this season and has posted an offensive rating of 153.7 (points per 100 possessions) and a defensive rating of 61.8. It was just a matter of whether or not the Los Angeles Clippers, a pretty good team in their own right, could hold on after leading by as many as 23 points in the second quarter. Let’s add “giving up 41 first-quarter points yet winning going away” to the list, because that’s what happened in Thursday night’s 124-117 win over the Los Angeles Clippers.
Paul tallied 35 points and eight assists after sitting out the previous two games and three of the last five games with his groin injury, numbers that won’t provide any solace after his team was outscored 22-5 to end the game.
Blake Griffin starred with 12 points on 10 shots, but it was Chris Paul who took over in his first game since the team’s loss at the Dallas Mavericks last Wednesday.
“Our confidence, our chemistry, the way we play…it’s definitely a carry-over from our championship run past year”, Warriors reserve shooting guard Brandon Rush told Reuters after his team had beaten the Clippers for a second time this season. “They put their personal goals aside and it’s all about the team goal”. I think the difference right now for them is they just kept trusting. The Warriors have jumped out to a 9-0 start and have been seemingly unstoppable in the process.
Reigning league MVP Steph Curry dropped 13 final quarter points on his way to 40 for the night to lead all scorers as the Warriors netted 73 per cent of their shots in the final term.
If Golden State can beat the Clippers in a quarter and a half, where does this end? Their ball found anyone.
“Los Angeles stretched its lead to 23 points “ largest of the game “ early in the second on a 3-pointer by Austin Rivers.
They don’t have the singular will of Jordan – as good as Curry is he’s never shaking that loose and floppy aesthetic – but they have built it collectively. Is it because Curry has not a drop of controversy in his DNA, heavy as he is into his faith and the last guy who would be attached to a Kardashian? But, at a few point we have to pick ourselves up out of the gutters and try and see the silver lining on the horizon. They just calmly took the body blows and exploded when they absolutely needed to. The Cavaliers lead the Eastern Conference at 9-3. Golden State is the third-best team in the league at scoring points off turnovers with 21.4 per game. J.J. Redick sat out Thursday, missing his third consecutive game because of back spasms. After Charlotte, they close the seven-game road trip against Toronto, Brooklyn, Boston, IN and Milwaukee. He shot 6-of-13 and knocked down a couple of three-pointers.
“Obviously, you don’t get a trophy for it, but it’s just a nice story line and a nice way to start the season”, he said.
Unfortunately for the Clippers, they couldn’t sustain that.
We knew the Golden State Warriors were going to get back into the game Thursday night. The Clippers ended the first shooting a ridiculous 71 percent and seemingly on a mission to make a statement against the Warriors. Like when DeAndre Jordan and Doc Rivers picked up technical fouls with the Clippers up by 19 (I’m sure they would like to have those two Stephen Curry foul shots back).
