Hillary Clinton to speak at Fisk University Friday evening
Hundreds of people packed a gymnasium on Fisk’s campus to hear Clinton speak, with several hundred more listening through speakers outside.
Clinton stopped mid-speech to alert event staff about a woman who keeled over at her rally in Memphis, Tennessee. U.S. Rep. Steve Cohen, who introduced Clinton, confirmed the meeting, and the campaign offered no further comment.
“We can create the political pressure for change”, Clinton said, adding she would try to convince Republican Tennessee Gov. Bill Haslam to expand Medicaid, a reference to Haslam’s hybrid expansion proposal that was crushed by the Tennessee Legislature earlier this year.
“We’ve got to do what works, and it doesn’t work for us to shut our borders and pull up the gangplank”, she said of Republican calls for a stop to the flow of refugees from Syria in response to the ISIS terror attacks in Paris this month. I thought it was the talk of Republicans that might have done it.
Billie Calloway, 73, said she left her home in Donelson to come to Fisk because she’s a Democrat and Clinton supporter.
The parade of presidential hopefuls marching via Tennessee this yr has-been virtually exclusively Republican as candidates within the crowded GOP field fight to accomplish a foothold in a state in that has-been reliably red in each one of the past 4 presidential elections.
“I know there were cases right here in Memphis”.
Clinton handily won this state in the 2008 Democratic presidential primary over Barack Obama, and while reliable polling of the state is scarce, Clinton is considered the strong favorite.
“Clinton-inspired ObamaCare was written, passed, and implemented by Democrats”. Yet Hillary Clinton refuses to admit it’s not working. “Instead, she’s once again doubling down on a failed policy”, said Tennessee Republican Party Chairman Ryan Haynes.
