Ian Krol: Braves trade for Tigers’ Ian Krol
The Atlanta Braves announced Friday they sent the veteran outfielder to the Tigers for Ian Krol and Gabe Speier.
Atlanta also received cash considerations in the deal.
“Cameron Maybin is a good outfielder with plenty of experience in center field”, said Al Avila, Tigers Executive Vice President of Baseball Operations and General Manager. Â ” He is coming off a solid offensive season and brings speed and athleticism to our club. Offensively, 2015 was his best season since his first two years with the San Diego Padres in 2011 and 2012. Brad Ausmus and the coaching staff will determine Camerons role during spring training..
Maybin projects to start in center field and bat leadoff for the Tigers next season. He hit. 267 with a. 327 on-base percentage and a. 370 slugging percentage while stealing a team-high 23 stolen bases in 29 attempts. Krol struggled to a 5.79 ERA in 28 innings with the Tigers in 2015.
A left-hander who was up and down each of the last two seasons, Krol was the last remaining player with the Tigers organization from the deal that sent Doug Fister to the Washington Nationals two offseasons ago.
According to MLB.com’s Mark Bowman, trading Maybin results in a roughly $6.5 million salary savings for the Braves.
The Tigers obtained Speier from the Boston Red Sox last offseason in the trade that brought Yoenis Cespedes and Alex Wilson to the Tigers in exchange for Rick Porcello.
Speier pitched in 33 games with Single A West MI in 2015 and had a 4-2 record with a 2.86 ERA, with 36 strikeouts. On Wednesday, they traded for closer Francisco Rodriguez.
