Djokovic routs Nishikori in ATP finals
As part of his role as a UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador, the world No 1 travelled to Belgrade in September to visit one of the child-friendly spaces that has been set up to support a few of the thousands of refugees and migrants travelling through Serbia.
Even though Djokovic has been almost unbeatable this season and with the 7,000-point ranking gap that the Serb now holds against Federer, the 17-time Swiss grand slam champion believes that the former is incapable of being overcome. “I became a father and I got married”.
“I’ve had many humanitarian or charity activities in my life”.
“I made a lot of unforced errors. I didn’t feel I had any chance”.
Murray, who opened his ATP World Tour Finals campaign with a 6-4 6-4 victory over David Ferrer in London, said: ” If he wins his appeal and is able to play, then, if I’m the captain, I’m picking my strongest team to try and win”. “I mean, it’s bad what’s happening”.
Six of those matches have been this year – and indeed Federer is the last man to have beaten Djokovic, having taken him down in the final at the Cincinatti Masters in August.
Novak Djokovic claimed his 15th consecutive win at London’s O2 arena earlier this afternoon, beating Japan’s Kei Nishikori.
The two tournament favorites have split 42 career meetings but lately Djokovic’s had the edge, and he won recently at the US Open on a court more suited to Federer. All the players wore black ribbons on their shirts as a mark of respect to the victims of Friday’s atrocity, which saw 129 people killed at various locations across the French capital, and Djokovic led the o2 crowd in a burst of spontaneous applause for them after taking just over an hour to take care of the Japanese No 8 seed.
Victory for Djokovic would secure his place in the semis, while a straight sets win would guarantee Federer a last four spot.
“I didn’t allow him to dictate the play, I mixed up the pace and I was feeling very comfortable on the court, I was feeling like I could get the balls back and serve efficiently”.
The eighth-ranked side beat home favourite Jamie Murray of Great Britain and Australia’s John Peers 6-3, 7-6 (7/5), the fourth-ranked pairing.
With the score even at 3-3 in the third set, the sixth-seeded Berdych had his third break point of the match – after converting the previous two – but he put a backhand into the net after a long rally. “He doesn’t look old for me”, he said.
“It’s going to be really important match for both of us”, Nishikori said. We worked hard all year to qualify for this tournament.
“We want to make the most of our time here”. I think I played the way that I wanted to play. “But then immediately I was playing well”, Nadal told reporters.
