One Direction Triumph Over Justin Bieber In Uk Albums Chart
All the promo work and TV interviews – including saying sorry to Ronda Rousey’s sister – apparently paid off for Canadian singer Justin Bieber who broke records this week.
Justin Bieber has of course had to settle for Silver this weekend, but it isn’t all bad as his fourth studio album notched up just over 90,000 combined chart sales this week, so he wasn’t actually that far behind One Direction.
The Biebs has dominated the chart today as he has THREE songs charting within the Top 5 this week.
The Canadian singer’s singles “Sorry”, “Love yourself” and “What do you mean” took first, third and fifth place.
Kylie Minogue lands herself a 22 Top 40 album with her festive release Kylie Christmas (12), and Eva Cassidy’s Nightbird, released to mark the 20 anniversary of her Blues Alley concert, is new at Number 17.
Made In The A.M is the band’s first release as a foursome, following the departure of Zayn Malik earlier this year, and is their fourth to top the Official Albums Chart after 2012’s Take Me Home, 2013’s Midnight Memories and 2014’s Four. The number was not only enough to beat Bieber in what turned out to be a contentious battle for the top spot, but the big sales also helped Made in the A.M. become the fastest selling United Kingdom album of the year so far. Every track from it charted inside the top 100 singles. Justin has 15 songs in the Top 50, while 1D has nine, but the highest ranked song of the British boy band, “Drag Me Down” was at number 9.
Made in the A.M. could be One Direction’s last album for around 3 years, or even more, as it has been hinted that their extended break could span around 2 years. Justin promoted his album on “Today” and “Ellen”.
To promote their albums, 1D appeared on “The Ellen DeGeneres Show”, “Good Morning America” and “Jimmy Kimmel Live!”
