Parenteau scores 2 to lead Maple Leafs past Avalanche, 5-1
The Toronto Maple Leafs are averaging 2.4 goals per game and are scoring on 20.7 percent of their power plays.
The much-maligned Toronto Maple Leafs special-teams units enjoyed a special night against the Colorado Avalanche.
However, the club remains a distant 100/1 on the odds to win the Stanley Cup. Penalties_Kadri, Tor (tripping), 6:25; Beauchemin, Col (high-sticking), 9:51; Gormley, Col (delay of game), 11:31; Martinsen, Col (interference), 15:50; Marincin, Tor (cross-checking), 19:14.
“We’re all pretty comfortable where we are and we’re moving the puck, we’re bringing the puck to the net and good things are happening for us, ” said veteran P.A. Parenteau, who scored two power-play goals Tuesday and has recorded all but two of his nine points in his last eight contests. The teams split a pair of games last season with each winning at home after regulation time.
“Whenever you play your old team, you always want to play your best, and I think tonight was arguably his best game since he’s been a Leaf”, goalie James Reimer said.
The Colorado Avalanche loses 5-1 against the Toronto Maple Leafs, largely due to awful performances of the special teams. Grigorenko took the spot on a line with MacKinnon and Duchene in the third period in place of Landeskog after he was ejected against Boston, producing one goal and three assists in the last four periods. Reto Berra is expected to start his fifth consecutive game after allowing five goals over the past four, improving his overall save percentage to.953. Try as the Dallas Stars, Nashville Predators, and Vancouver Canucks did, they simply couldn’t solve the NHL’s top goalie of the week, who led the Maple Leafs to three straight victories.
Those numbers were rendered moot by breakout performances against the Avalanche. The Leafs killed off all three penalties they took, and Komarov added his sixth goal of the season for good measure. Since we’ve been doing our jobs, we’ve been getting more chances and … if we’re going to play that many minutes, we’ve got to play hard and play well.
Parenteau was back on the ice for the Leafs’ second power-play goal as Holland dished the puck to Boyes who fed it to Bozak. That was little consolation to Roy. “Obviously we need to learn from it. I thought we had a good start to the game, but we were just sloppy on our power play giving them two great chances”. The center scored from one knee as Toronto went up 3-0 for the first time all season. Boyes still has the ability to keep up with the pace of the National Hockey League and can play in the bottom six and on the power play, wish could make him an affordable add to a team looking for veteran depth.
Notes – Toronto forward Nick Spaling missed the game with an undisclosed injury.
