NY City police ‘aware’ of new IS video threat
The six minute video includes a scene appearing to show a suicide bomber making preparations and zipping up a leather jacket.
Police said they were aware of the footage and there was a “heightened state of vigilance”.
Following a string of terrorist attacks in Paris on November 13 that left 129 dead and 352 wounded, NY Gov. Andrew Cuomo directed state agencies to “enhance their preparedness”.
He then said several times that “there is no specific and credible threat against NY City”.
“This city places great importance on the safety of New Yorkers and the nearly 60 million visitors who will come to this city”.
“Just in this last week, we’ve initiated the first wave of our new Critical Response Command, which will grow to 500 officers specifically dedicated to anti-terrorism activities”, he said.
“We will not submit to their wishes”, de Blasio vowed.
“No city is better prepared to protect against terrorist attack”, Bratton said.
NYPD deputy commissioner of intelligence and counter- terrorism John Miller said a similar video was released in April.
The crackdown on Islamic State terrorist cells continues as the supposed ringleader of the deadly attacks in Paris was reported dead Thursday morning, while five Syrians were arrested in Honduras for fake passports.
“The people of NY City will not be intimidated”, CNN quoted Mayor Bill de Blasio as saying.
While the mayor tries to temper the situation many residents say they are anxious while a few stoics insist they will gp about business as usual bud with a few apprehension.
Police officials said the video released Wednesday uses old footage of busy Manhattan streets to threaten an attack in what NY City’s mayor called “an attempt at intimidation”. The flipside of that audience is fear is the grist of the terrorist mill and the videos are meant to inspire that.
Earlier this week, another video released by ISIS threatened to strike Washington. The Federal Bureau of Investigation said that from the ISIS video, they surmised that the terrorists intend to strike at St. Peter’s Basilica and other historical monuments in Rome and Milan.
Bratton also addressed the concern that the ISIS propaganda video could inspire people with ties to the terror group.
‘I would anticipate that this is not the only operation that ISIS has in the pipeline, ‘ he said.
