“Star Wars: The Force Awakens” Grabs $50 Million Before Release
Disney’s take on The Force Awakens is that the film needs to be ‘for the fans’.
This highlights two things: “Fantastic Four” is, unquestionably, one of the biggest flops of all time (it cost a whopping $120 million) and “The Force Awakens” is on pace for the biggest opening weekend of all-time. There was also a certain character who seemed so far-removed from what Star Wars was all about that it had to be a joke, right? As the arrival of “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” draws ever nearer, fans have been voraciously consuming the last six movies with increasing excitement.
“According to Variety, J.J. Abrams” highly-anticipated addition to the “Star Wars” franchise has easily raked in $50 million in advance ticket sales. The current record holder for December is “The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey”, which opened to $85 million three years ago.
Mark Hamill faces a financial penalty if he gives away the plot to the new “Star Wars” movie prior to its release.
And lastly this week, we’ve got an enticing glimpse at a few concept art for what fans can expect when they go see “The Force Awakens” at Disney’s flagship theater El Capitan on Hollywood Boulevard in Los Angeles.
The Boeing 787-9 planes boast external decorations as well as themed headrest covers, napkins and cups featuring different Star Wars characters. Jurassic World – now the movie with the biggest opening weekend of all time in the USA – made $82 million day one, with a total of $208.8 million by Sunday night. Currently, “Star Wars: Episode VII: The Force Awakens” reigns over ticket sales for “Star Wars” and “The Empire Strikes Back” but still lags behind “Return of the Jedi'”.
