Raymond van Schoor passes away
He was recovering in ICU but unfortunately passed away on Friday evening.
Flanke told, “Raymond was a tremendous asset to Cricket Namibia and the national cricket team”. The wicketkeeper-batsman recently played the Intercontinental Cup match against Ireland and was an integral part of Namibia’s ICC World Twenty20 Qualifier campaign earlier this year.
On Friday, Cricket Namibia confirmed that the 25-year-old had passed away. Richard Flanke, Namibia’s cricket president paid tribute to Schoor and wrote a letter to Schoor’s family. ‘He was taken far too early from us. “May his soul rest in peace!”
VAn Schoor represented his side in more than 200 games, during a South African domestic game against Free State on Sunday he collapsed on the field and was immediately hospitalised.
Van Schoor, one of the youngest players to play for Namibia, made his debut at the age of 17 in 2007, and went on to play 92 First Class matches, with an average of 27.40 and a career-best 157, scored against Bermuda in 2010.
Van Schoor was batting on 15 against Free State – Namibia were chasing a 241-run target – when he complained of dizziness and asked for water, according to reports.
He scored more than 4000 runs over 173 matches in 50-over and 20-over cricket, with 25 half-centuries. He collapsed while having the drink, and Nicholas Scholtz, his batting partner, was reported to have caught him before he fell.
At 22, Schoor was named the man of tournament at the ICC World T20 Qualifier in the UAE.
