Shopping small on November 28th
Do you plan to shop on Black Friday or Cyber Monday?
Small Business Saturday is the highlight of the Shop Small movement, which began five years ago to encourage people to support small businesses. As we devour turkey around the table with family and loved ones, be sure to give thanks to those who support the community; the small business owners. “The business owners need support from residents to ensure they can continue to support these initiatives as they have for many years”. Over the last two decades, small and new businesses have been responsible for creating two out of every three new jobs, and today the country’s 28 million small firms employ 60 million Americans, half of the private sector workforce.
On December 5, shopowners, stallholders and traders are invited to join in with Small Business Saturday, a campaign to get shoppers to think about using local businesses before multi-nationals.
Small Business Saturday campaign director, Michelle Ovens said: “Small Business Saturday is exceptional example of collaboration and co-operation with small businesses teaming up in communities around the UK”.
And according to American Express, “a company that analyzes the impact of buying local has found that local businesses are known to have a “multiplier effect” on their communities – the idea that every dollar spent at a local, independently owned business can stay in the community and help generate a far greater economic value”. As you “shop small”, also consider “dining small” at a number of unique locally owned eating and drinking establishments.
Our Chamber is doing our part in creating an atmosphere where commerce can occur right here in our community.
28, downtown Menomonie will once again be participating in Small Business Saturday.
