Trudeau holds bilateral meeting with Obama at APEC summit in Manila
Prime Minister Trudeau is attending his first APEC Leaders’ Summit this year, just two weeks after winning Canada’s leadership.
For the man at the centre of it all, the hope is that it will mean a better understanding of the contribution Canada intends to make on the world stage.
Standing with Obama, Trudeau retorted: “So young, and yet so cynical”.
Canada also expressed its support for the Philippines’ possible accession to the Trans-Pacific Partnership, a trade agreement among 12 Pacific Rim countries initiated by the United States, Coloma said.
“We have always had a sense of urgency about the need to defeat ISIL”, Obama said, saying the coalition, including Canada, has exerted steady pressure on the group.
“I also think we have to recognize that if we want to preserve this planet for our kids and our grandkids” we need cleaner sources of energy, Obama said.
According to Justin Trudeau, Canadian citizens have indicated to him that the nation should and can do more to help Syrian refugees.
Obama, 54, who becomes the elder statesman among the three North American leaders, had his first bilateral meeting with Trudeau on Thursday.
Their 23-minute meeting covered a range of topics, including the fight against Islamic extremism, the refugee crisis and the economy.
Trudeau again said Canada will do “more than its part” and remain a strong member of the campaign against ISIS, which has claimed responsibility for the deadly Paris attacks of November 13, and the downing of a Russian plane over Egypt.
Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau offered nothing but a “legislative solution” to the loud clamor for Canada to take back a cargo of allegedly toxic garbage shipment.
“But what Barack pointed out to me about how fast his daughters grew in the seven years since that first night of his electoral victory really struck home to me”, Trudeau said.
There was no animosity in sight over Obama’s decision earlier this month to reject the Keystone XL pipeline project. A local newspaper featured photos of them at the top of the front page and a story headlined, “Girls only have eyes for Trudeau, Nieto”.
Obama echoed that, saying he was “glad” for both countries having “traditional fuels” but that they needed to push more into renewable fuels.
“At the same time, I know this is exposing a problem that needs fixing within our own legislation, and we are going to lean into this as our action”, Trudeau said.
“My expectation is that Canada will be going through these same debates just as we do”.
