Netflix is developing a Lost in Space remake
According to Deadline, Netflix outbid a few stiff competition to get their hands on Legendary TV’s Lost in Space remake. I’ve learned that in a competitive situation, with multiple bidders, the streaming network has landed the project, which is being written with an eye toward a straight-to-series order.
In the past year, Dracula Untold screenwriters Matt Sazama and Burk Sharpless have been developing the remake for Legendary Television. Marshall is expected to direct.
In addition to Sazama and Sharpless, Synthesis Entertainment’s Kevin Burns is on board to executive produce. There was also a film released in 1998 that starred William Hurt, but received negative reviews. Since her death in 2013, he has been exclusively spearheading Synthesis’ efforts.
With Jashni as president and chief creative officer at Legendary, he and Burns reunited as the independent financing and production company.
Though it sounds like it may be more serious in tone than Irwin Allen’s ’60s original, it’s said to be part of Netflix’s attempt to pursue “big scale, four-quadrant family entertainment”.
The original series was set in a future 1997, with the US planning on colonizing space. When Dr. Zachary Smith (Jonathan Harris) attempted to sabotage the Robinson’s ship, he was stranded on the vessel with the family as it was sent hopelessly off course into space. It ran for three seasons (83 episodes) on CBS before being cancelled. Fox, the studio that produced the series, put it into syndication where it became a cult classic.
