Colin Kaepernick: Kaep pops up on injury report with shoulder
With Kaepernick out, the 49ers promoted Dylan Thompson from the practice squad to serve as Blaine Gabbert’s backup this week against the Seahawks.
The San Francisco 49ers have placed quarterback Colin Kaepernick on Injured Reserve List due to a shoulder injury and is out for the rest of the season, the team announced Saturday morning.
Kaepernick will undergo surgery Tuesday in Denver, the source said. However, the injury apparently didn’t affect his ability to practice because Kaepernick was listed as a full participant in each of the team’s daily injury reports this week. He didn’t show up on the injury report for a shoulder issue until Friday. The 49ers can cut Kaepernick with relative impunity before April 1, 2016. He practiced fully all week, though quarterbacks are off-limits from contact. There goes any chance for Kaepernick to change the 49ers’ mind about him before the end of the season.
The 49ers signed Kaepernick, a 2011 second-round pick, to a six-year, $114 million contract extension in June 2014.
Thompson completed 60 percent of his passes in the preseason for 277 yards and two touchdowns.
It appears as though the the 49ers have officially given up on Kaepernick this season after placing him on injury reserve.
