Paris Attacks: David Cameron welcomes United Nations resolution to ‘take all necessary
Mr Cameron is seeking to build cross-party support for United Kingdom air strikes against IS – also known as Isil, Isis or Daesh – in Syria, though there is no timetable for a Parliamentary vote.
The resolution calls upon member states that have the capacity to do so, to take all necessary measures on the territory under the control of ISIL in Syria and Iraq.
“The global community has come together and has resolved to defeat this evil, which threatens people of every country and every religion”, he said in a statement.
The flurry of meetings follows France’s worst-ever terror attack which left 130 dead and has exposed holes in European intelligence and border security.
About 60 per cent of the British public back air strikes on Isis and sending in soldiers as part of an worldwide force, according to a new poll published yesterday.
“I am in favour of effective military action to destroy Daesh, Isil, (but) bombing alone, without credible ground forces, is ineffective action”, he told the BBC.
The resolution – co-sponsored by the United Kingdom which at present holds the rotating presidency of the security council – condemns a number of terror attacks – including the murder of 30 Britons in a Tunisian beach resort in June. Turkey has supported rebel groups throughout the over four years of conflict in Syria in the hope they can help oust President Bashar al-Assad from power. The source said: ‘The PM’s response to MPs will be a blueprint for war. He did not give further details but added that the army has also shut down five illegal crossings to Syria in the area which were used to smuggle people and goods. In Lebanon’s capital Beirut, at least 41 people were killed and over 100 injured in twin suicide attacks on November 12.
Meanwhile, the United States and its allies targeted IS with 20 air strikes in Iraq and 22 in Syria on Friday, the U.S. military said.
“It is in Syria, in Raqqa, that ISIL has its headquarters and it is from Raqqa that a few of the main threats against this country are planned and orchestrated”.
