Federer sets up Djokovic final showdown
He will be overhauled by Federer if the world number three wins the Tour Finals.
Djokovic proved a step too far in Saturday’s semi-final, winning 6-3 6-3 with a sublime display of power and accuracy.
From then on the Serb was barely troubled by the 14-times grand slam champion who could make little impression and did not sniff a single break point in the 79-minute encounter.
That said, Roger’s one guy that gives Novak problems, so that will be in Djokovic’s head.
“It was a great performance, from the very beginning I managed to execute the game plan”, he said.
“Hopefully I’ll be able, if I play him tomorrow, to play better than I’ve done a few days ago”.
Federer beat Djokovic in the group stage of the tournament earlier in the week, ending a Djokovic’s 15-match unbeaten run at the season-ending showdown.
On match point, one last cross-court back-hand from Djokovic left Nadal flat-footed on the baseline, sealing the match in an hour and 19 minutes.
With another victory on Sunday he would become the first player to win the season-ending tournament four times in a row.
The top-ranked Serb defeated Rafael Nadal 6-3, 6-3.
“Novak for the moment is nearly unbeatable”.
World number one Djokovic has now drawn level with Nadal for the first time in what is the most prolific rivalry since tennis turned professional.
The first game was perhaps the best of the match as Nadal, against the serve, bludgeoned a pair of fantastic forehand winners that had the crowd on their feet but they weren’t enough to prevent Djokovic holding.
A netted backhand on his toes allowed Federer to open up a 3-0 lead over Wawrinka and it allowed him to cruise his way to victory in just over an hour, to set up a second duel with Djokovic at the 2015 event.
Leading 5-3, all Djokovic had left to do was break Nadal to close out the match – and although Nadal made a last-ditch attempt to stave off what was by now the inevitable, he was unable to.
‘I’m feeling slightly better than past year, ‘ said Federer.
In the 2014 semis, Federer and Wawrinka had a bust-up.
Against Nadal, the 10-time major champion showed why he is the best player in the world.
He has been reinvigorated and his confidence renewed in London. There may have been no Masters or grand slam titles to celebrate this year, but Nadal has put together his best ever sequence following a U.S. Open (17-5).
“I need to keep improving things if I want to have chances against Novak next year”, Nadal added. “That’s what I am going to try”.
“He’s had a tremendous year, another great semifinal against Rafa [Nadal]”.
“Things are like this today”. You never know what’s going on in the future. “It took a lot of time”. Not everything is that easy. “The year, it was unbelievable for me”.
Sunday is a repeat of last year’s final, which Djokovic won by a walkover after Federer withdrew with an injury, something he has rarely done in his career. He won all three group matches, including against Roger Federer.
