Houston Must Get Past UConn Before Navy Game Means Anything
UConn, though, has a ball-hawking defense that has come up with 15 interceptions this season, six of them from sophomore cornerback Jamar Summers, including one that he returned 67-yards for a touchdown against Tulane.
The Houston Cougars suffered their first loss of the season today, a 20-17 setback to CT At halftime, UH quarterback Kyle Postma, who is playing for the injured Greg Ward, Jr., was 6 of 11 for 72 yards.
UConn’s offense managed very little after the opening drive, but all of that changed when offensive coordinator Frank Verducci reached into his bag of tricks in the fourth quarter. Houston gave up a season-high 212 rushing yards last week against Memphis, so UConn’s ability to establish the run could be a huge piece. The Huskies have five seniors starting on defense: end Kenton Adeyemi, tackle Julian Campeni, safety Andrew Adams and linebackers Graham Stewart and Marquise Vann.
Houston hosts Navy next Saturday for the conference’s Western Division title and a spot in the December 5 AAC championship game. However, Anderson’s passing skills were utilized when he caught a swing pass from Tim Boyle and threw a 45-yard touchdown pass to Noel Thomas.
UH struck back in the blink of an eye, as junior corner Brandon Wilson took the ensuing kickoff 94 yards for a touchdown, his second return score of the year. Reports out of Houston say Ward is making progress and has a chance to play. It wasn’t a surprise to us.”Postma started at quarterback for Houston in place of Ward and finished 16 of 27 for 190 yards, with one touchdown and one interception”.
Houston’s Kenneth Farrow was held to 46 yards rushing.
Postma first had to leave the game for two plays after he was hit in the shoulder and then left the field grabbing his right knee on Houston’s final drive.
It was Shirreffs’ only pass of the game. The teams traded field goals in the second quarter.
UConn has not fared well against ranked opponents, with just two wins in 25 previous games.
The Huskies, who were just 2-10 a year ago, assured themselves of at least a. 500 season for the first time since earning a Fiesta Bowl berth in 2010.
The CT Huskies scored their only points in the 1st quarter but it was enough to defeat the Tulane Green Wave 7-3 this past Saturday to improve to 5-5 (3-3 AAC East) on the season.
“To have this kind of win happen for those seniors and their families, I know that is going to be a catalyst for so much success in the future”, UConn coach Bob Diaco said.
