SC loses at home to FCS The Citadel
Wood had five points in what was a 14-3 run over a 2½ minute spurt after halftime that got the Blue Demons within 56-51, but DePaul managed only one field goal in the next four-plus minutes and couldn’t recover. However, the team only came up with two Elliott Fry field goals and the Gamecocks ended the half trailing 14-9.
Mindaugas Kacinas scored a career-high 23 points and SC never trailed on the way to topping DePaul 76-61 in the Paradise Jam on Friday night. “It is awesome. I can’t thank the coaches and players enough”. The Citadel coach Mike Houston said the way Renew played was a testament to his character and epitomizes the team that will be in the FCS playoffs next week. “Sometimes, when teammates get back together, we still talk about it”, said Sands, who stressed he won’t have any mixed feelings Saturday because he knows the Gamecocks pay his bills. A 59-yard run from Cam Jackson on The Citadel’s second play from scrimmage would put the Dogs ahead 7-0 with 12:26 left in the first quarter.
“We’ve got to have a long meeting”.
“I heard the crowd cheering and then it died down”, said Cooper, who finished the game with 11 catches for 191 yards and one touchdown.
Facing fourth down while backed up against its own end zone, SC appeared to have pulled off a miraculous touchdown throw from Perry Orth to Pharoh Cooper that would have been the go-ahead score. “Everyone expects us to win these games being that we are going against a lower division school”. Three pass attempts netted just three yards, but on fourth-and-7 Orth hit Cooper down the left sideline, and with 39 seconds left the receiver went 94 yards for the game-winning score. Clemson is the best team in college football, and they just failed to beat The Citadel at home. He carried it eight times, and seven of the final eight plays on the 13-play, 75-yard drive to account for 45 yards on the drive.
For the Gamecocks to take care of business Saturday, they’ll need a heavy of dose of Wilds, David Williams and Shon Carson to keep the clock moving and keep the triple option attack of The Citadel off the field.
It was the first win for a FCS team over a SEC team since Jacksonville State beat MS 49-48 in two overtimes in 2010.
“I definitely didn’t imagine to have the day that I had”, he said. “That big touchdown run at the end was a last minute check. Don’t you worry I’ll be standing at the gate next week to welcome them to Williams Brice and our team will be there as well!!”
