Arsenal looked like they were ‘fighting a losing battle’ against Tottenham
Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger drew comfort from Olivier Giroud’s post-match frustration after the French striker squandered a succession of chances during his side’s 1-1 draw with Tottenham Hotspur.
Harry Kane put Tottenham ahead at the Emirates Stadium 32 minutes into Sunday’s derby, but Spurs wasted a number of second-half chances as Kane, Christian Eriksen and Toby Alderweireld all passed up opportunities to press home their advantage.
“It was fun to play but we all looked a bit knackered, especially in the first half”, he said.
“Every time we have a dissspointment I feel we respond well in the game after”.
“When you look at Sunday’s results again you see Villa against City is 0-0, Liverpool lost, we played a 1-1 draw – it just shows you that the championship will be extremely hard for everybody. But we responded. I think we respond well”.
“Possibly because in the last few games we have not had midfielders”, said Gibbs when asked about why he was deployed as a left midfielder against Tottenham.
“There’s still a long way to go and we’re not going to come out and say “we’re title contenders” but we’ve just got to keep doing what we’re doing”, he said.
Wenger hopes Cazorla will show no ill effects from his dizzy spell, saying: “I was sitting there thinking ‘do I take him off or not?’ You never know, maybe it will get better”.
Two players who did fail to impress for the Gunners, however, were Santi Cazorla (average rating 5) and Giroud (average rating 5.125), though the Spaniard was hooked at half-time after complaining of dizziness.
Kane was equally frustrated not to have seen his side double their lead but believes Spurs proved they have the fitness to compete on all fronts this season.
“I was happy to come on in a big game like that and get a goal”.
“We promised ourselves to do better than last season, not to drop a lot of points too early”.
“There was talk about whether we’d have enough energy and I thought we showed we did”.
Tottenham are unbeaten in 11 Premier League games following a 1-0 defeat by Manchester United on the opening day of the season.
