Oklahoma escapes TCU after Horned Frogs miss 2-point conversion
The final score might not tell the whole story of the Sooners’ win. That’s because the Horned Frogs spent most of Saturday’s game digging themselves out of a rut. Oklahoma has the offense to match TCU’s ability to move the ball and score plenty of points.
Texas Christian strikes first, scoring on a 40-yard touchdown pass from Foster Sawyer to Kolby Listenbee – Horned Frogs go 97 yards in 6 plays and 1:49 to take a 7-0 lead.
Zack Sanchez, a Fort Worth native, had his second interception on the game’s next play.
Defensive end Josh Carraway proved to be a force. Dede Westbrook had a 36-yard touchdown reception from Mayfield, and Austin Seibert with three-of-four on field goal attempts.
Playing with third-string quarterback Bram Kohlhausen, the Horned Frogs drove down the field with time winding down. Kohlhausen hit Ke’Vontae Turpin for an 86-yard touchdown and found Emanuel Porter for the 14-yard near game-winning touchdown.
TCU then opted to go for the two-point knockout punch instead of kicking the extra point to tie the game, but Oklahoma’s defense came up with a stand to escape with the win. He was shaken up early in the second quarter by a helmet-to-helmet hit from TCU linebacker Ty Summers, who was ejected for targeting, but did finish the first half.
The severity of Mayfield’s injury isn’t clear, and it’s possible Oklahoma’s staff was simply following concussion protocol by keeping him out after halftime.
In order for Oklahoma to keep its championship flame flickering, it will need to claim intrastate bragging rights next weekend against Oklahoma State when Bedlam descends upon Stillwater.
Mayfield, upon his departure, was 9-of-20 passing for 127 yards and two touchdowns. On Saturday Oklahoma’s offense looked very different with Knight holding the reins.
Backup quarterback Trevor Knight looked nothing like the MVP quarterback that led the Sooners to a Sugar Bowl victory over Alabama. Mayfield might be one of the best quarterbacks in the country; he entered Week 12 as the second-most efficient passer in FBS.
The Oklahoma offense trotted back to the sidelines expecting a few time to rest, but Sanchez had something else in mind. The Horned Frogs are also 4-6 against the spread and just 1-4 ATS on the road, while the Sooners are 8-2 at the betting window this season, which includes a 4-1 ATS home mark. A failed two-point conversion followed and the Sooners’ lead was cut to 23-13 with 12:43 remaining. Baylor finished with 700 yards of total offense, Oklahoma State ended up with 441 with 433 of them through the air.
