Air France plane from Washington to Paris diverted to Halifax
The airline said it requested the landings of both aircraft as a precautionary measure to “conduct all necessary security checks”.
Heinz says a handful of planes are diverted to Pocatello each year with a lot of them having a final destination of Salt Lake City.
An Air France flight travelling from Los Angeles to Paris had been diverted to Salt Lake City. Salt Lake airport officials said the plane had received a phone threat.
The threats came after last week’s attacks in Paris that killed 129 people and heightened security concerns around the world.
Once the flight was deemed safe Air France 65 departed just after midnight for Paris and landed around 10 a.m. MST.
Air France also reported a second bomb threat, the same night, which forced a Washington DC-to-Paris flight to divert to Nova Scotia, where, again, no problems were found.
Keith Rosso, a passenger in one of the flights told AP: “everything was smooth, everything was great, everything was going swell” for the first two hours of the flight, then things changed.
The Federal Bureau of Investigation issued a release stating that nothing was found aboard the Airbus A-380 used for flight 65 that was deemed a threat either, according to Reuters.
“It’s an RCMP matter”, Spurway said referring to the Royal Canadian Mounted Police. Everyone was removed from the plane and went through customs as airport police and the FBI investigated the aircraft.
“I didn’t feel like my life was in danger, but it did take me a while to actually calm down”, Wolfe said.
On Tuesday, a bomb threat led Germany to cancel a soccer game with the Netherlands that Chancellor Angela Merkel and members of her Cabinet planned to attend.
“AF065 took off from Salt Lake City to Paris at 0.29am local time and is estimated time to arrive in Paris Charles de Gaulle at 5.37pm, local time”, the airline statement continued. German Chancellor Angela Merkel had been due to attend.
Both the German and Dutch team buses were turned back, as they were five minutes from the stadium when the game was called off.
“Thorough searches, checking documentation – they are very, very thorough now”, Greg Pellerin said. The Islamic State group claimed responsibility for both attacks.
