Barcelona Humiliate Real Madrid 4-0
Rafa Benitez’s side were swept aside at the Santiago Bernabeu as a Luis Suarez brace and goals from Neymar and Andres Iniesta saw Barcelona claim the first El Clasico spoils of the season.
Meanwhile Barcelona coach Luis Enrique was enjoying one of the best nights of his career.
“We tried to go on the attack but it wasn’t possible”.
He added: “We made mistakes, we paid dearly for them against a good team, with quality”.
Benitez reacted by bringing on Isco and Dani Carvajal, while Barca brought on Messi, who is probably not the player you want to see when you are 3-0 down.
His future is in the hands of club president Florentino Perez, who has seen numerous managers come and go and whose own role is under the spotlight. Iniesta was applauded by a few Madrid fans when he was substituted in the second half.
“We have lost three points in La Liga and nothing more”.
Barcelona, meanwhile, sit pretty at the top of the table after this most spectacular of performances, which must rank as their best display against their bitter rivals since Pep Guardiola’s side beat a Madrid side coached by Jose Mourinho 5-0 in 2010.
Madrid were made to regret their good opportunity when Barcelona took the lead in the eleventh minute.
“Now we have to train hard and work hard to improve. It’s a long tournament and we have to try to recover these six points”.
Barcelona on Saturday brightened their hopes of a sixth La Liga title after humiliating Real Madrid with a stunning 4-0 victory.
Security around the stadium has been ramped up to what officials have said is unprecedented levels following last week’s attacks in Paris.
A minute’s silence was held to the tune of the French national anthem La Marseillaise and a large French flag was unfurled by the Madrid fans before kick-off in honour of the victims before kick-off. Madrid needed to win to pull even with its rival in points and return to the top of the standings on goal difference. “We were solid at the back too and it was more the merit of Barca than the fault of Madrid”. Cristiano Ronaldo, Karim Benzema and Gareth Bale did not have any impact on the game.
Following the game, Barca boss Luis Enrique said the win was one for the ages. The Argentine playmaker had missed the last nine Barcelona games.
Sergi Roberto burst through the middle and played Suarez in on the right of the penalty area to open the scoring in the 11th minute with a clinical finish.
Leo Messi came on for Barca, as if things couldn’t get any worse, and fifteen minutes from time, the rout continued as Suarez finished off from a pass by the Argentinean.
Neymar then doubled the advantage before halftime, slotting low beyond Keylor Navas from close range.
