Cam Newton dominates Washington

The powerful Panthers are now 10-0 this season after Newton’s career-high five touchdown tosses helped them to a 44-16 thrashing of the Washington Redskins.

The Washington Redskins have yet to win back-to-back games this season and that trend continued with a 44-16 loss to the Carolina Panthers on Sunday.

Newton, who improved to 3-0 as a starter vs. the Redskins, threw a franchise-record four first-half touchdown passes.

Newton has thrown for 15 touchdowns and run for another six, averaging 40.7 yards per game when he’s running. Kirk Cousins completed 20 of 25 passes for 324 yards and four touchdowns to lead the Redskins.

Washington and the Panthers would combine for three punts before Carolina made a decision to take a safety instead of risk a blocked punt in their own end zone.

The Atlanta Falcons are the closest rivals in the division, while the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and New Orleans Saints are a long way behind them as the season continues in the second half. “You can’t fault her for that”, Newton said, via ESPN’s David Newton.

The Panthers were able to force their fifth turnover of the game on a Jordan Reed fumble with less than two minutes remaining in the quarter and took their 41-14 lead into the final stanza.

They had 14 yards rushing against Carolina. He threw for a career high in touchdowns with four, enough to certainly carry his team to victory. This plays right into the Panthers strength. KR Andre Roberts finally made a play in burgundy and gold, returning the kickoff 99 yards for a touchdown to the game at 14. Cam Newton and Carolina gladly turned that into their fourth touchdown of the half on a slant to Greg Olsen matched up against Jeron Johnson.

Cousins was sacked five times. The Panthers lead 38-14 early in the second half and the suspenseful part of the game was over.

Despite rallying for a 16-13 win over the Rams, there was little consolation as coach John Harbaugh announced after the game that quarterback Joe Flacco has torn ligaments in his knee and will miss the rest of the year.

Carolina’s defense is championship-caliber and Washington doesn’t measure up where it matters, especially stopping QB Cam Newton and RB Jonathan Stewart in the second half. I bet more teams do that going forward.
