MI State stuns Ohio State on final play
The Buckeyes running back ripped into Urban Meyer and the play-calling in the game.
All that stands in the way of a ideal, 12-0 regular season for Clemson is next week’s game at arch rival SC, which lost to FCS opponent Citadel earlier Saturday.
Ohio State had its 23-game winning streak snapped on a last-second field goal by MI State, putting the Spartans on the road to the Big Ten championship game and leaving the Buckeyes with only pride to play for next week at MI.
“We knew we were the underdogs and we knew we were counted out by a lot of people, but that doesn’t have an impact on our confidence”, Pendleton said. “Honestly, we didn’t see those plays at all for the rest of the game”.
Lots of emotions, lots of passion, lots of heart.
“It’s a combination of things”, he said of the defense’s struggles to slow down MI State.
The Spartans’ victory thrusts them back in the national title race, something that appeared a distant dream after they lost at Nebraska on a bad call on November 7.
Even with the Buckeyes out of the mix, the Big Ten championship looks like it could be the only de facto playoff quarterfinal of all the conference title games.
So with the loss in the books, how will the Big Ten East shake out?
And they are two wins from the greatest opportunity in MSU athletics history, and a stage that’ll validate Dantonio’s program to even the most casual fan, stubborn pundit and old-school snob. Little chance was given to win without Cook playing. There was no panic from the Spartans.
He advised backups Tyler O’Connor and Damion Terry to pretend they’d be performing in practice, rather than before an Ohio Stadium-record crowd of 108,975.
Elliott played despite wearing a big pad on his right shin to protect a cyst that had developed from an infection caused from a cut suffered in the game at IL the week before.
The Buckeyes scored their two touchdowns off of MI State turnovers, including on a six-yard pass from Barrett to Jalin Marshall that put Ohio State ahead 14-7 in the third quarter.
No. 19 NAVY 44, TULSA 21 (at Tulsa, Okla.) – Quarterback Keenan Reynolds ran for 81 yards and a touchdown while directing a Midshipmen offense that rolled up 512 yards on the ground. Sione Houma and De’Veon Smith ran for touchdowns for the Wolverines (9-2, 6-1 Big Ten, No. 12 CFP).
No. 16 Florida State 52, Chattanooga 13: In Tallahassee, Florida, Sean Maguire threw two touchdown passes and Dalvin Cook had his seventh 100-yard rushing game and added two more scores for Florida State. The streak was snapped, and whatever Heisman hopes he had blew up in his home stadium.
Junior quarterback Cardale Jones also suggested strongly on Twitter that this was also his last home game for Ohio State. Ohio State first needs Penn State to beat MI State next week to open the door to the Big Ten title game. Ohio State got a guy behind the defense, so it’ll come back to it later.
“It’s very disappointing”, Elliott said. So, what exactly was the issue for Ohio State’s offense?
Zeke Elliott just ripped the OSU play calling. Was Meyer happy with it a year after last season’s offensive coordinator Tom Herman bolted to take the Houston job?
“I am concerned about how [the offensive line] affects each other, not in a positive way but in a negative way”, the Gators coach said on ESPN.com. He blamed the loss on the coaches and Meyer!
“We weren’t put in the right situation to win this game”, Elliott said, according to USA Today. Said he lobbied Meyer on sideline for calls and did not get them.
“I deserve more than 11 carries”. “I’m disappointed. I’m disappointed in the play-calling and the situation we were put in. I don’t know what was going on”, and the clincher, “I’m disappointed by the lack of effort from the coaches”. This is clearly not the same Ohio State team that we saw tear through the postseason past year, and that was made pretty crystal clear on Saturday.
MI State was in a position to win the game due to the impressive play in the trenches on both sides of the ball.
Oklahoma State, still unbeaten, ends the season with back to back games against top 10 teams, Baylor and Oklahoma. The Buckeyes had dueling quarterbacks, a leaky offensive line and a banged up secondary.
