Last ‘Hunger Games’ opens to $101 million, a franchise low
In the case of The Hunger Games, splitting the book was inevitable since the first two reshaped the cinematic landscape and there were only three books – one of which, Mockingjay, wasn’t almost as well-reviewed as the first two. She’s also fed up with being a pawn in the political games played by Snow and President Coin (Julianne Moore). Let others vacation; Lawrence keeps her nose to the grindstone. In fact, Lawrence as an actress and humanitarian evolved with Katniss just as Katniss evolved with Lawernce’s maturity and capacity to become one of Hollywood’s most fascinating leading ladies. But alas, I’m still going to see it tonight. The films are far more intriguing, at least to me, than the books were, but they both have their strengths. “The overall franchise has grossed over $2 billion worldwide and counting”, said David Spitz, co-president of theatrical distribution for Lionsgate. Universal greatly improved the theater count on her film to 126 screens, but the movie grossed $185,000: that’s a miserable $1,468 PSA, and don’t be surprised if Uni begins to scale back and toss this one back in the ocean.
“I hope I’ve grown up [ in the last six years]”, says the actress, 25. Without delving too deeply into the new characters, it gets hard to remember what they’re doing there, or who they even are. Whatever its faults, this remains light years ahead of the Insurgent/Maze Runner film franchises, which have so far failed to steal The Hunger Games’s thunder.
Now that everything has come to an end, it’s still not quite sunk in for Jennifer.
“It was absolutely the most miserable three weeks”, says the filmmaker. The water was heated.
“We’re having a great weekend”, Spitz said. We were exhausted, because when we did the fight sequence in the sewer, all of our gear and our costumes were completely waterlogged, so it was an extra 20 pounds.
Unlike a lot of dystopian science-fiction, “The Hunger Games” suggests that all is not lost, and individuals, if they band together, can make a difference. And I think that this character is so overwhelmingly supportive of women. Catching Fire also saw an expanded cast, but there was time and space to develop Finnick, Johanna and the other allies. If you’re a Katniss fan, you should definitely see this movie. Billy Ray’s film is the second release from STX Entertainment after sleeper hit The Gift, and is a remake of the 2010 Argentinean movie that won the Oscar for best foreign-language film. “We were all just complaining”. I literally wanted to shed into tears with that moment. “Thank you for completely making my point that when a woman speaks up and is assertive and has a voice, she’s called a brat”.
Even the charms of Jennifer Lawrence can’t lift the fourth and final instalment of The Hunger Games franchise. It probably comes from Googling I! “The reviews have been pretty spectacular and people really like the film”.
The best scene in the whole movie takes place in a sewer, as Katniss and her team try to escape an army of creatures. But it will also be the lowest opening weekend of the four films.
The film then skips forward a few years. “Your entire world changes”. You don’t feel different but everyone reacts to you differently. I can see every negative way that people can take it, and I don’t want to sound like I’m complaining.
Based on a novel by Rosalie Ham and set in the 1950s, it is a peculiar mix of arch comedy, romance and overwrought melodrama as Winslet’s Myrtle “Tilly” Dunnage returns to the one-horse town in the Australian outback where she grew up but was hounded from as a child after allegedly killing an obnoxious classmate.
