No. 17 LSU falls to No. 25 MS 38-17
If reports out of Baton Rouge are true, LSU head coach Les Miles days are numbered, especially after being blown out for the third week in a row, this time by Ole Miss, 38-17.
After opening the season 7-0, LSU has lost three consecutive games to take itself well out of contention for the SEC title or a College Football Playoff spot. Hours before the game on Saturday, a member of the LSU Board of Supervisors said that Miles would be on the hot seat even if he were to beat Ole Miss and A&M to finish 9-2. Trent Domingue jogged out to attempt a 27-yard field goal once the drive stalled, but the sure-footed junior kicker missed wide left.
So here’s the issue at play for LSU’s powers. So after the Rebels pummeled LSU 38-17, would LSU athletic director Joe Alleva have any words of support for his suddenly-embattled coach?
Citing a “highly ranked source involved in the decision-making process”, Nola.com’s James Smith reported today that the outcome of LSU’s last regular season game with Texas A&M on Saturday at Tiger Stadium won’t have any bearing on Miles’ future with the school. With the result of the Ole Miss game the Tigers are now 13-10 in the last three seasons of SEC play.
On the ensuing drive LSU scored their first points of the game on a 39-yard touchdown pass from Brandon Harris, as a few younger players on the Rebel defense blew a coverage and receiver Tyron Johnson was able to haul in the deep pass.
Ole Miss quarterback Chad Kelly was 19 of 34 for 280 yards with two touchdown passes, including one to Laquon Treadwell that came after Harris was intercepted in the first half.
Don’t get me wrong, playing in the SEC is tough and going undefeated every year is a lot harder. So now Miles might be on his way out; we’ll have to see.
The Rebels contained the LSU rushing threat and forced Brandon Harris to go to the air often.
The series is indicative of LSU’s offensive approach in the past two seasons: physically pound the opponent with a relentless rushing attack.
Two Ole Miss defenders stepped in front of Harris and tallied their first interceptions of their careers, including one from senior Christian Russell in the second quarter, and another from freshman Zedrick Woods in the third quarter.
“Well I don’t know about my job security”, Miles said when asked what he will tell his team. “But coach Miles is our leader”, he said.
“Defensively, I thought for the first 29 minutes we were absolutely excellent”. Those close to Fisher said he may have interest in a possible return to LSU. I’ll try to give the most educated guesses I can based on my experiences with the university power structure and knowledge of how these searches tend to go.
I’d like to avoid speculating on a bunch of names at the moment at the moment, out of respect for Miles and the job he’s done. We missed two field goals, turned it over and then fumbled it going in and still had a chance to win it there.
