A few Starwood hotels hit with credit card-stealing malware
Starwood said hackers were able to see debit and credit card information of a few people that dined or shopped at 54 of its hotels, including a few Sheraton, Westin and W locations.
Starwood says that as far as it can tell, the infection did not affect its reservation system or the Starwood Preferred Guest membership system, and that “there is no evidence that other customer information, such as contact information or PINs, were affected by this issue”. Your credit card details were likely taken if you used the hotel’s restaurants or gift shops.
Starwood said in the press release that they have immediately engaged third-party forensic experts to conduct an intensive investigation to determine the facts following the discovery of the issue.
“We have been working closely with law enforcement authorities and have been coordinating our efforts with the payment card organizations”, he said.
The affected hotels have already taken the necessary steps to secure the payment card information of the customers.
Starwood Hotels and Resorts has become the latest company to be hacked.
The affected hotels include the Sheraton New York Times Square hotel, the Westin New York Grand Central New York and The St. Regis Bal Harbour Resort in Florida.
That list also notes the possible dates (ranging from November 2014 to October 2015) when each location could have been compromised, and they were all before the hotel chain announced its acquisition by Marriott.
If you are a frequent traveler at Starwood hotels or resorts, you may to keep a close eye on your credit card statements.
