Benedict Cumberbatch’s character in Zoolander sequel branded transphobic
In the trailer for Zoolander 2, Cumberbatch’s androgynous character All is asked by Zoolander whether they’re a “male model or female model” to which Cumberbatch replies “All is All”.
“Just want to let everybody know that this is NOT the full Zoolander 2 movie, the real movie is like at least 11 million times longer”, he wrote.
“The controversy surrounds an androgynous supermodel played by British actor Benedict Cumberbatch, named All”, The Hollywood Reporter noted.
“Zoolander 2” is facing a backlash from LGBT advocates, who say that Benedict Cumberbatch’s character in the film is “transphobic”.
“Like any rational person, I think there’s a place for discourse and humor in society”, she went on, “but the last thing the transgender community needs at this moment is another harmful, cartoonish portrayal of our lives”.
“By hiring a cis actor to play a non-binary individual in a clearly negative way, the film endorses harmful and unsafe perceptions of the queer community at large”, Rose adds.
Peljic walked the runways in both men and women’s fashion shows before coming out publicly as a transgender woman and undergoing sex reassignment surgery in 2014.
Some, however, had said that Cumberbatch’s portrayal is not transphobic but a rather foolish one, as noted by MailOnline.
The trailer, released earlier this week became a web sensation, revealing a ridiculous montage of antics that introduce the sequel to the much loved, although controversial original. The film will see Ben Stiller’s Derek Zoolander and Owen Wilson’s Hansel McDonald struggling to find their place in the cutthroat modern fashion world, before a secret agent played by Penelope Cruz recruits them to infiltrate a risky organisation which is systematically killing off the world’s “beautiful people”.
“Zoolander 2” is set to hit theaters on February 12, 2016 – 15 years after the first “Zoolander” movie was released.
