The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 2 Has $101 Million Opening Weekend
Though the odds might be in Katniss Everdeen’s favor, the box office was not.
Lionsgate spared no expense in planning a farewell to its most valuable series.
Lionsgate Studios spent roughly $160 million in the making of the major blockbuster. Catching Fire, the second film, earned $25.3 million in Thursday night grosses in 2013, and took in $158 million in its domestic debut. It opened up to $55 million in its first day and $121.9 million in its first weekend, which was the same weekend previous year.
Sony distribution chief Rory Bruer noted that there won’t be another mainstream comedy in the marketplace until Tina Fey and Amy Poehler’s “Sisters” debuts on December 16. It received a “B-” CinemaScore from audiences, while both “Mockingjay” and “The Night Before” received “A-” CinemaScores.
Talking about her in the latest and last instalment of the movie franchise, Donald, father to 24 actor Kiefer Sutherland, said: “She’s a delivery system for truth”. Wisps of the characters’ personalities are taken and expanded all throughout the movie and not just on the script but also in their actions as well as in the scenes and the sets.
Worldwide, the movie earned $247 million, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Third was the computer-animated 3D cartoon “The Peanuts Movie”, which pulled in $12.8 million.
The Weinstein Co.’s “Carol”, starring Cate Blanchett and Rooney Mara, opened with $248,149 in just four theaters. “The reviews have been pretty spectacular and people really like the film”.
