Is Amazon Fresh on its way to the UK?
Amazon will begin delivering fresh fruit and veg to consumers across London and Leeds in a bid to tap into the UK’s £149bn grocery market.
The service is expected to launch in the United Kingdom sometime this year, in fact, possibly by September or this autumn.
Don’t worry if you’re not too clued up on AmazonFresh, the grocery delivery service from Amazon that brings food and essentials to your doorstep – it’s only available in a limited number of USA cities at present.
The company’s online delivery system for groceries formerly launched in 2007 for USA states. Fresh will therefore compete against established services in the United Kingdom (like Ocado, tesco, and Sainsbury’s).
UK Amazon shoppers can now choose from more than 450,000 ambient SKUs but while bulk buys of individual items can represent bargains, ordering a mixed grocery basket means using third party sellers, leading to high postage costs and multiple deliveries, which neuters the low price points on offer.
Furthermore, the Times reported Amazon’s decision to “remain thoughtful and methodological” in its motive to expand Amazon Fresh’s target market.
An Amazon spokeswoman declined to comment.
The company’s release of its Amazon Dash feature allows users to “say or scan” any product name to add to their virtual shopping cart and make future reminders for daily users.
