Major League Baseball Notes: Dallas Keuchel, Jake Arrieta win Cy Young Awards
He started living up to his promise the following season, when he went 10-5 with a 2.53 ERA, and broke through as one of the majors’ top pitchers this year, relying on a slider-cutter combination that consistently baffled hitters. His 1.66 ERA, 0.844 WHIP, and 225 ERA+ marks all led the National League. He acknowledged the super stats piled up by his Los Angeles rivals spurred him.
The rest, as they say, is history, and it’s a footnote at best. He received one second-place vote, 24 third-place votes and three fourth-place votes. Two votes went to his Los Angeles teammate, Clayton Kershaw.
The NL runner-up was Greinke, who earned ten first place votes, 17 second place votes, and three third place votes to finish with 147 points. He had a 1.77 ERA, struck out 236 and pitched a no-hitter.
“I would assume a phone call might be made, at least”, Arrieta said.
During that span, he also hit two home runs while giving up just two.
McHugh appeared to struggle with his command mightily to start the season, but settled down the second half of the season.
When Arrieta began his career with the Orioles, every time I’d see him pitch the Red Sox they would knock him around. “It’s kind of wonderful to think about it”.
It’s not so much that the Cubs’ Arrieta topped the Dodgers’ Greinke to win his first Cy Young.
Chicago Cubs right-hander Jake Arietta won the National League Cy Young Award. It’s something that we continue to look to build on. But should he win the NL Cy Young Award?
The Dominican slugger said in a video posted on The Players’ Tribune that he will play one more season. Greinke went 19-3, fanned 200 and had a scoreless streak of 452/3 innings.
Keuchel, a left-hander for the Houston Astros, beat out David Price to win the American League Cy Young Award. With a young core of players and Arrieta continuing to anchor the staff, the winds may be finally blowing favorably for the Wrigley Field denizens.
Kershaw went 16-7 with a 2.13 ERA, leading the league in innings pitched and becoming the first pitcher in 13 years to strike out 300 batters in a season.
The 27-year-old ranked first in a bevy of pitching categories in the AL, including wins and innings. I got to that point where that was something that not only myself, but the team expected.
But the vote reveal came Wednesday night, making it official: Arrieta received the honor as the NL’s best pitcher. Price drew eight first-place votes and 143 points for his split season with Detroit and Toronto. After winning 42 games between 1975 and 1976 alone, Jones won 43 total over his final six seasons, posting a 43-69 record and 3.80 ERA for the Padres and Mets before fading (literally) into the sunset in 1982.
