Newton throws five TDs as Panthers stay flawless

The Redskins got manhandled by Cam Newton and the Carolina Panthers on Sunday, losing 44-16 in Charlotte. The undefeated Panthers aim to continue the best start in franchise history when they host the resurgent Washington Redskins on Sunday. Cam Newton completed 21 of 27 passes for 217 yards and one touchdown, and added 23 yards and ran for another TD.

Andre Roberts had a 99-yard kickoff return for a touchdown for the Redskins (4-6), who’ve lost nine straight on the road.

Carolina’s momentum carried into the second half as Bene Benwikere sacked Cousins on the first play from scrimmage on a cornerback blitz, jarring the ball loose and recovering at the Redskins 20. Quarterback Kirk Cousins threw a career-high four touchdowns and turned in a flawless passer rating of 158.3 against the Saints. He’s lead the Panthers to a 9-0 start.

T.J. Yates, taking over for the injured Brian Hoyer, threw for 229 yards and two TDs, but more importantly didn’t turn the ball over to a NY team that has hit its lowest point this season.

Cam Newton has a chance to set a record this afternoon. The Redskins defense has given up more than 135 yards per game so they will need to figure out a way to stop the powerful quarterback.

Stewart got an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty after his 12-yard touchdown catch in the first quarter after Jeron Johnson went low but legal on him at the goal line.

Despite rallying for a 16-13 win over the Rams, there was little consolation as coach John Harbaugh announced after the game that quarterback Joe Flacco has torn ligaments in his knee and will miss the rest of the year.
