Hokies: Virginia Tech vs North Carolina Tar Heels football game today
North Carolina is rolling and is ready to claim the Coastal Division title, with the Hokies standing in the way of their goals for now.
A legendary coach’s goodbye. The Hokies (5-5, 3-3 ACC) are winners of two straight and are looking to extend that streak in Beamer’s 180th and final home game as Virginia Tech head coach.
It was, as Coach Larry Fedora described, “a flawless storm”.
Virginia Tech had its most emotional Hokie Walk yet as the pregame ceremony included a message for Frank Beamer from the members of Metallica and an overtime thriller that was powered by Hokies turning turnovers into touchdowns. “Whatever you want to call it. It was all going against us”.
The extra point kick – with just 2:54 in the game – left UNC ahead by just 24-17.
“There were six games that season we led in the fourth quarter and just couldn’t get over the hump, but the administration hung with him”. But the storm was brewing. Players rotate through every four years, but coaches stay. “He always had time for us and never let football get in the way of being our father”. You know, a couple plays you’d like to have back, but that’s going to happen against a dynamic group of athletes like these guys. “And it did in the fourth quarter”. Before his touchdown pass, he set UNC up with a first-and-goal with an 18-yard pass to Ryan Switzer. Moments later, Williams fumbled again and the Hokies recovered. “We need Lane Stadium to be the loudest it’s ever been on Saturday”. Before we get into further details into why Virginia Tech can not rest on their laurels, we should mention that the Hokies did get the job done against Georgia Tech.
The Tar Heels are in a position to win the ACC Atlantic Coast Division for the first time since the conference split into two divisions with either a win at Virginia Tech Saturday or a Pittsburgh loss to Louisville that day. But this team was determined to be different than its predecessors.
The Hokies had the ball first in overtime that ended with a 41 yard field goal from Joey Slye. “That’s what we talked about, just be really good in the fundamentals and the techniques, and be brilliant in the basics”. “And I was like, ‘Good deal, Coach”. During the early days of Beamer’s career, players would try out for spots on the special teams, and they took great pride in that.
The Tar Heels stormed the field, mobbing Davis in the end zone.
For much of the game UNC was leading, but only by 4 points or by a touchdown, and could not seem to get its offense going. But when he picked Ohio State, no one apparently told him fans like you to feel you’re one of us and not just an out-of-state mercenary for National Football League dollars.
The Las Vegas oddmakers usually know more than we do. “(Inside) those four walls at Kenan Stadium, it’s been rough, man. But we found a way to continue to keep winning”.
Quinshad Davis leads the way with 43, followed by OG Landon Turner (38), OT Jon Heck (34), LB Jeff Schoettmer (34) and OG Caleb Peterson (33). They haven’t asked me for one thing this season.
The Tar Heels played their final home game last week, beating the Hurricanes 59-21. After the scare put into Clemson by the Orange last week, the Tigers will be more than ready for a team they should beat comfortably.
