Earlier in the day, that won him plaudits from U.S. President Barack Obama.
Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau on Thursday assured the Philippines his government is “developing” a solution to the shipment of tons of Canadian waste to the country, which has been the subject of diplomatic protests filed by Manila.

Trudeau wants to signal to the global community that Canada is finally taking the climate change challenge seriously – a task made much easier Sunday when Alberta Premier Rachel Notley unveiled plans to impose a carbon tax, phase out coal-fired power plants and cap emissions from the province’s controversial oil sands, the largest emitter in the country.

Not so for the Philippine Daily Inquirer, which put the Mexican and Canadian leaders on its front page and asked readers: “Are you with Team Nieto or Team Trudeau?” As no amount of amendment to Canada’s law would extricate them from culpability and worldwide shame, Trudeau should have seized the golden opportunity to display real statesmanship required of every leader and commit to re-importing Canada’s garbage. “It’s a joke and a few people find them amusing sometimes. Later this month he’s due to travel to meet Queen Elizabeth, attend a Commonwealth conference and then the Paris climate summit, which he and Obama have said is a priority.
Obama said he told Trudeau: “Justin, congratulations, you and your family look great”.
